Getting Over Life's Hurdles
The move from a small village in Thailand to a large city in the United States was an exciting but difficult transition for Chong Teng, a 35-year-old husband and father of two. Chong and his family arrived to the United States after living in a refugee settlement in Wat Tham Krabok, Thailand. At Wat Tham Krabok, Chong never had to worry about many of the day-to-day challenges he would face in the United States. Upon arrival, Chong had to find employment, learn how to use public transportation, find a home for his family, manage money properly to pay monthly bills, and provide his family with all of life’s basic necessities. Chong had little time to adapt to this new lifestyle.

Shortly after arrival in late 2004, Chong met with one of HAP’s Employment Counselors. As recommended by his counselor, Chong immediately enrolled in English classes to develop the language skills he needed to find work. Upon enrollment, Chong knew very few words in English and had no ability to communicate. As a result of much persistence and regular class attendance, Chong developed the skills to converse fluently in English. In addition, the classroom experience taught Chong that education greatly improves one’s ability to succeed in the United States. Four years later, Chong had secured employment, spoke fluent English, and had dreams of attaining a GED.

Unfortunately, Chong unexpectedly lost his job in early 2009. He once again began to work closely with his Employment Counselor. Through the individualized assistance, Chong developed and refined his job-seeking skills. Chong’s Employment Counselor provided him with a weekly list of job opportunities, assistance with the completion of job applications, and access to job interviews and job fairs. Chong also attended HAP’s Job Club in order to improve his job-seeking skills.

After only one month of job-seeking, Chong secured full-time employment as a driver at Hertz. Chong enjoys his job and sees great opportunities for career advancement within the company. As a result of his hard work and determination, Chong now owns a vehicle, has a stable job, and understands that he, too, can achieve the “American Dream.”
