Gopi is a refugee from Bhutan. She came to the United States in 2013 never having had the opportunity to attend school. Being unable to speak any English, or read and write in any language, she came to HAP and enrolled in our Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. At that time, she could not even sign her enrollment form and was forced to sign with an simple “x”. Gopi can now hold conversations, as well as write in English. She has since been able to share her personal story to her teachers and classmates, describing the incredible journey she made from Bhutan to the United States.
